Stouffville (also known as Whitchurch-Stouffville) – a rural town with population of approximately 35,000 in 2006 – is located on the Northern outskirts of Ontario’s Greater Toronto Area, and in the Estern part of York Region. Along with King, East Gwillimbury, and Georgina, Stouffville is still considered to be one of the rural communities in York Region. However, the town's appearance is changing and it looks increasingly more like nearby suburban towns such as Markham and Richmond Hill.
According to the Fairy Lake Jobs Hiring Index statistics, the job market in Stouffville still accounts for only 0.2% of all employment opportunities advertised online in York Region, with 20 to 25 new jobs being posted online each month. One of the town’s largest and best known employers is Grey Power Insurance. Other employers include a number of Golf Courses and transportation companies in the area. Many of the Stuffville’s residents commute daily to Toronto, Markham, Richmond Hill, and Vaughan. Stouffville has a higher-than-average percentage of part-time jobs compared to towns in the Southern part of York Region: In 2007, about 20% of all new jobs located in Stouffville advertised online were for part-time jobs, while in nearby Markham, this percentage was only 10%.
Stouffville is located about 45 kms (30 miles) North-East of downtown Toronto and immediately North of Markham, and can be reached from Toronto by car using HWY404. There is also a local commuter train and bus service between Union Station in Toronto and Newmarket, operated by Toronto’s GO Transit.
