Newmarket – a growing suburban town with population of approximately 78,000 in 2006 – is located in the Northern outskirts of Ontario’s Greater Toronto Area, and in the centre of York Region. The Regional Municipality of York has its main offices in Newmarket as well, making the town York Region’s administrative centre.
According to the Fairy Lake Jobs Hiring Index statistics, the job market in Newmarket accounts for about 10% of all employment opportunities advertised online in York Region, with 400 to 500 new jobs being posted online each month. The town’s largest employer is the Southlake Regional Health Center. The Southlake Health Center has been in the process of a major expansion since 2007, and accounts for a significant number of Newmarket’s newly created jobs. Other large employers in the area include Magna International and State Farm Insurance – both located in the nearby town of Aurora just South of Newmarket. Many of the Newmarket’s residents commute daily to Toronto, Markham, Richmond Hill, and Vaughan. Newmarket has a higher-than-average percentage of part-time jobs compared to towns in the Southern part of York Region: In 2007, about 20% of all new jobs located in Newmarket advertised online were for part-time jobs, while in Markham, this percentage was only 10%.
Newmarket was recently designated by the Provincial Government of Ontario as one of the centres in which the province would like to focus population growth in the near future. It is located about 50 kms (35 miles) North of downtown Toronto, and can be reached from Toronto by car using HWY404 or HWY400. There is also a local commuter train and bus service between Union Station in Toronto and Newmarket, operated by Toronto’s GO Transit.
